Fanfiction and Tam Lin

Fanfiction, stories based on a pre-existing canon told outside of the official canon control, is fueled by diverse factors, ranging from exploration of tropes to interaction with a community of people with a common interest. It can be a reaction to or participation in a fandom or a welcoming area to practice writing or simply done for fun and love of writing. Tam Lin, as a story, is generally well-known enough within many fandom circles to exist as a trope in and of itself. Below is an attempt to stay vaguely current with some of the resulting fanfic, whether it is primarily centered on the ballad of Tam Lin or is using it as an element in a story set in another fandom.

This section also includes lyrics to songs based on Tam Lin that fall more into the category of re-interpretation rather than retelling the story. The line between the two is sometimes hard to draw, as the best reinterpretations and parodies are sincere in their love and respect for the source material. Material included here is no less a part of the story about the story than the more traditional versions of ballad in many cases.
